The aspect ratio of an image describes the proportional relationship between its width and its height. It is commonly expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, as in 16:9. For an x:y aspect ratio, no matter how big or small the image is, if the width is divided into x units of equal length and the height is measured using this same length unit, the height will be measured to be y units.

In, for example, a group of images that all have an aspect ratio of 16:9, one image might be 16 inches wide and 9 inches high, another 16 centimeters wide and 9 centimeters high, and a third might be 8 yards wide and 4.5 yards high.

Why need to change video aspect ratio?

filmaspectratios.jpg

The picture shows black bars look like on TVs with different aspect ratio. Most televisions and computer monitors currently available have an aspect ratio of 16:9, which offers a perfect fit for high definition television shows. However, movies are usually filmed with a ratio of 21:9, which will result in black bars at the top and bottom of the picture when it is displayed on the average TV.

In addition, some TV shows or TV broadcasts may have a conversional 4:3 aspect ratio, when you watch a conversional 4:3 program on your 16:9 widescreen TV, the difference in shape between those two ratios can also result in a "Pillar boxed" picture - one with black columns standing to the left and right of the image.

How to change video aspect ratio?

To avoid aspect ratio , you can do the following things:

- Get to know your TV's aspect ratio controls.

Today's TVs generally have a dedicated button on the remote that lets you quickly cycle through your options. Since the aspect ratio of the programming you're watching can change frequently - when you change the channel, for example, or even when a new show begins on the same channel - you should get comfortable using these controls to get the picture to your liking.

- Set up your video sources.

Go to the picture settings on your TV menu and set it to the proper aspect ratio that adapts with your TV aspect ratio. The specific terms used in these menus differ, but for a widescreen TV you'll likely see something called "widescreen" or "16:9," for example.
